Thong Nhat Ward, Hoa Binh City: Transforming Lives through Lemongrass Essential Oil Production
For approximately 20 years, lemongrass has been a staple crop for the ethnic communities in Hòa Bình province. This plant requires minimal care, thrives on sloped terrains, and is well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions. It matures quickly and is resistant to pests.

1. Lemongrass growing area in Hoa Binh, Vietnam
Hòa Bình province is among the leading regions in Vietnam for lemongrass cultivation, boasting a total area of about 9,000 hectares. In Hòa Bình City alone, 10 out of 15 communes and wards engage in lemongrass farming, covering approximately 302 hectares. Notably, Thống Nhất Ward leads with 178 hectares dedicated to this crop.
Despite its ease of cultivation and high yield, farmers previously faced challenges in selling lemongrass due to fluctuating prices and pressure from traders. Buyers often selected only the bulbous stems, leaving leaves and less aesthetically pleasing plants unused. At times, prices dropped to as low as 4,000 VND per kilogram, making harvesting unprofitable for many households.
2. A New Direction Enhancing Livelihoods through Lemongrass
Recognizing the potential of lemongrass, 67-year-old Nguyễn Thị Bình established the Bản Dao – Thống Nhất Agricultural Cooperative. She researched and implemented techniques to distill essential oil from the entire lemongrass plant, including parts previously discarded. This approach maximized resource utilization and increased the economic value of the crop.
Triệu Thị Vân, an ethnic Dao resident of Thống Nhất Ward, shared: “My family cultivates 4 hectares of lemongrass. Previously, we sold it for only 8,000 to 10,000 VND per kilogram. Since the cooperative established a distillation facility, even smaller stalks and leaves are purchased for essential oil production, doubling the value of our lemongrass. Thanks to this, we’ve been able to buy a television, a motorcycle, and have risen out of poverty.”
Producing lemongrass essential oil has not only provided stable income but also created additional employment opportunities for local residents. The leadership of Thống Nhất Ward highly appreciates this model, noting that it has helped ethnic minorities escape poverty, secure stable jobs, increase income, and significantly contribute to economic development and new rural construction in the area.
The shift from selling fresh lemongrass to producing essential oil has revitalized the lives of Thống Nhất Ward’s residents, turning lemongrass into a sustainable income source and improving the community’s quality of life.
