RAW MATERIAL REGIONS
Eucalyptus is a type of hardwood tree with soft bark, slender lance-shaped green leaves containing essential oil sacs. The flowers are short, with elongated bud-shaped fruits about 1 cm long, containing numerous dark brown seeds. Besides its use for timber and shade, in Vietnam, eucalyptus is also utilized for its leaves to produce medicine and essential oil.
Due to its strong growth capability, suitability to various soil types and climates, eucalyptus is cultivated extensively throughout Vietnam. They are grown either in forests or scattered in residential land, spanning from plains, plateaus to mountainous and midland regions.
Through afforestation projects, greening bald hills, eucalyptus is the most widely planted tree for green coverage in the midland provinces such as Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, etc…
HARVESTING
The tree has deep, extensive roots and grows rapidly (reaching up to 20m in 7 years). Eucalyptus is usually propagated from seeds. Seeds are harvested in the autumn months (from August to November). Eucalyptus seeds are very small and are sown in perforated plastic trays or seedbeds, shielded from light by about 50%.
After 5-7 months of growth in the nursery, the seedlings are transplanted to their permanent location. At that time, the seedlings are usually 0.30 to 1m tall, with stem diameters ranging from 0.5 to 1cm. Sowing season is from September to November, transplanting from February to April or sowing from January to March, transplanting from July to September, harvesting leaves from trees older than 3 years.

The main raw materials are leaves and small branches. The raw materials are dried, ground before being subjected to distillation. The method of eucalyptus essential oil production is steam distillation. On average, 1 ton of leaves and small branches yields 4-5 kg of essential oil.
