Product Description

RAW MATERIAL AREA

Star Anise trees are not only found in Lang Son but also cultivated in several other provinces in the mountainous regions of Northern Vietnam such as Cao Bang, Bac Kan, and Quang Ninh. However, due to the natural advantages of climate and soil conditions in the region, Lang Son Star Anise products are still considered the highest quality, with high levels of essential oil and notably free from toxins (with trans-anethole content consistently above 85%).

HARVESTING

Star Anise trees typically yield ripe fruit for harvesting in September or April, with each harvesting season lasting 3-4 months. Generally, a Star Anise tree must reach a minimum age of 5 years before its fruit can be harvested, and each year presents two harvesting seasons, lending rarity to this product. With proper care and techniques, Star Anise trees can sustain high and consistent productivity, lasting anywhere from 20 to 80 years, with a cultivation cycle potentially extending to 90-100 years. Flowering and fruiting begin in the 8th year for naturally grown trees (from seeds), while grafted varieties commence bearing fruit in 4 years.

DISTILLATION OF STAR ANISE ESSENTIAL OIL

All parts of the Star Anise tree carry the aroma of essential oil. Therefore, theoretically, any part of the Star Anise tree could be used as raw material for distilling essential oil. However, in practice, almost all of the Star Anise essential oil production in Vietnam in general and at VIPSEN in particular is distilled from the fruit. At the VIPSEN essential oil factory, the raw Star Anise fruit is air-dried or dried through a drying system. Star Anise essential oil is produced using steam distillation under atmospheric pressure.
