RAW MATERIALS AREA
Cajeput Oil, scientifically known as Melaleuca cajuputi Powell or Melaleuca quinquenervia, is a species of woody plant belonging to the Myrtaceae genus. It is commonly grown in Southeast Asia, Australia, New Guinea, and the Torres Strait Islands. The tree has silver bark, white flowers, and green leaves. In Vietnam, cajeput grows naturally in many hilly areas in the North such as Vĩnh Phúc and Bắc Giang, and is extensively cultivated in the Central and Southern regions including Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Ha Tinh, Long An, Dong Thap and Hau Giang. The main purposes are for reforestation and essential oil distillation.
HARVESTING
The branches and leaves of cajeput are harvested after 2 years of cultivation. They can be harvested 3 times a year, but with good care, it’s possible to harvest 4 times a year, with an average yield of 9-12 tons per hectare per year.
DISTILLATION
Material for distillation: cajeput leaves. Cajeput leaves used for essential oil distillation should be harvested in the mid-morning when the sun is not too intense and the leaves are photosynthesizing strongly to obtain a high oil content. After harvesting, cajeput leaves can be dried in the shade or lightly dried or used fresh for oil production.
The primary method for cajeput essential oil production is steam distillation.
