1.1 Characteristics of Vietnamese eucalyptus trees

The eucalyptus tree has the scientific name Eucalyptus globulus Labill.

The tree appears quite popular in Vietnam due to its ability to adapt to diverse soils and climates. This is a woody plant with soft bark and long, crescent-shaped green leaves. The smooth leaf blades contain essential oil sacs. The flowers are short, about 1 cm long, containing many small dark brown seeds.

Eucalyptus originated from Australia, but it has long been introduced to many countries around the world from Europe to Asia, America, and Africa. The tree has deep, wide roots and grows quickly (7 years after planting, it can be 20m high). The tree has a very strong ability to absorb water in the soil, so it is often planted in swampy, damp areas to improve these areas and reduce the rate of malaria. Due to the fragrance of the leaves, they also have the effect of repelling mosquitoes. Besides, thanks to its good growth ability and deep roots, eucalyptus is also grown in mountainous and midland areas to green up bare land in a short time.

In addition to being grown for wood and shade, in Vietnam, eucalyptus is also used to get leaves for medicine and essential oil production.

Eucalyptus is usually grown by sowing seeds. Seeds are picked in the fall and winter months (August to November). Eucalyptus seeds are very small, sown in perforated plastic trays or sown on nursery beds, shielded from light by about 50%. After the seedlings have grown in the nursery for 5-7 months, they are planted in a permanent place. At that time, the planted seedlings are usually 0.30 to 1m tall, with a trunk diameter of 0.5 to 1cm. Sowing season is September-November, planting in February-April or sowing in January-March, planting in July-September, leaves are harvested from trees 3 years or older.

Eucalyptus trees are very strong, grow strongly and are difficult to be damaged by the environment. For that reason, they also symbolize indomitableness, strength, and tenacity in life.

1.2 Planting area

Thanks to its good growth ability and suitability for soil and climate, eucalyptus is grown everywhere in Vietnam. They are planted in forests or scattered in residential land, stretching from the plains and plateaus to the mountains and midlands.

Thanks to projects to develop trees to create forests and green bare hills, eucalyptus trees are the most planted tree for greening in midland provinces such as Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Bac Can, Thai Nguyen, etc.
